Mines, the Local Resource Supporting Seto Pottery
Seto pottery has generated a variety of products that have become an indispensable part of our lives. And it is the “Seto strata” (Seto layer group), with its rich reserves of high-quality resources, that make this possible.
The Seto layer group formed in the earth between 10 and 2 million years ago, and both Kibushi clay and Gairome clay, essential for pottery and glass-making, can be mined from these strata. Additionally, the quality of the clay is some of the best in the world, and the production of high-quality Seto pottery vessels has been supported by the high-quality resources (clay) that are available.
